Both characters are reclusive and do not speak to others unless strongly prompted by others. This mirrors the presence of mathematics in Noctaes life. The classmates of Solus are named Fib and Bonacci, a clear reference to the mathematician Fibonacci. The first three letters of Solus and Noctae are prefixes corresponding to night and day respectively.

The only owls in the game, alive or dead, to not be named after a real owl are Solus, Noctae, Fib and Bonacci. Solus: Solus is a tall and slender owl who's name is not directly derived from a real world species of owl. The fact that this hologram talks down on Aegolius will also become relevant. It mirrors the behavior of Asio very well. It gives us a brief cutscene with Geddy that highlights the skeptical and haughty nature of this owl. Proof: Asio: The game goes out of its way to point out that the third to last hologram is a reference to Asio.

It raises important philosophical questions about the nature of free will and all related discussions, and the owls of all beings would certainly take such a discussion very seriously, but would it cause mass "infighting and chaos"? What is described by Solus implies that the ancient owls were worried about something much more pertinent and tangible.Ĭurrent Hypothesis: Solus is the reincarnation of Noctae, Otus is the Reincarnation of Aegolius, Asio is the reincarnation of the hologram that triggers Geddy's dialogue, Strix and his students are reincarnates of the first three holograms in The Sanctuary, Otus's parents are reincarnates of the broken holograms. For The Loop to describe a cyclical process that takes billions of years with the end of the universe, it seems unlikely that it would cause mass controversy. Other reasons for our theory regard how Owl society reacted to knowledge of The Loop. The short version is that every hologram in the Sanctuary, even the busted ones, correspond to a relevant owl from the most recent generation. The easiest reason is simply the number of parallels between the owl holograms in The Sanctuary, and the characters in the game.

Solus owlboy series#
A soft reset would be a looser repetition of history, where current beings live out a series of events that is in many ways similar to their historical counterparts that existed in the Loop prior to theirs.ĭiscussion: So why did we choose a soft reset, and why does that matter? There's a few reasons we went with a soft reset. The entirety of Owl History and the game we are playing would all be part of one Loop. A hard reset would imply the eventual end of the entire universe, only for it to start again, owls to form, owls to rise, Noctae to be born, predict his own death, die, The Hex to be built, ect ect. His death happens over and over and over again throughout history.Īmbiguity: The biggest ambiguity here is whether The Loop describes a "hard reset" or "soft reset".

He describes his demise as a wave function out to infinity. Within the mathematics he views countless lives and deaths, most importantly (for now) his own. The only person who describes the effects of The Loop is Noctae. Proof: While The Loop is mentioned plenty of times, it is rarely described in detail, save for one instance. We believe The Loop describes a "soft reset", which is described more below.

There is definitely more than one way to view the information given, but this is the way we've been able to put things together with minimal ambiguity.Ĭurrent Hypothesis: The Loop is a cycle of rebirth/reincarnation, where history must repeat itself. Some of it plays out in the final sequence, some of it we get through blurbs in the Floating Continent, most of it we get in The Sanctuary accessed by finding the 3 Owl Coins. There's a ton of information regarding all of this at the end of the game. Me and my s/o have been talking about this non-stop and think we have some pretty good theories. TLDR LOOP IS CYCLICAL HISTORY, WE ARE REINCARNATES OF OWLS IN THE SANCTUARY, WE BUSTED THAT LOOP, AND HOT DAMN WE LIVED DOING ITĪt the end of the game, we're left with a lot of ambiguity regarding The Loop, the current status of The Loop, Otus, and just owl history in general.
